So you’ve heard something about this event called Show & Tell and don’t really get it but you’re a curious creature!? We decided that it was about time that we kept up a bit of a blog on what happens at Show & Tell so you can get to know it a bit better.

This is the first time we’ve done a round up of what went down at Show & Tell Vol. 5 on 1 March and means that we can point you in the direction of some interesting people.

Frustrated at how games events; an industry all about play, imagination and loosing yourself in the moment often can be dry, boring and largely involving sitting still large conference rooms to chug through humdrum powerpoint presentations David Hayward spends his time putting on playful festivals that celebrate the independent and undiscovered side of games making.

In Nottingham David works on a plethora of regular stuff from GameCity Nights an after-dark exploration of videogame culture organised by the fantabulous GameCity team to Gambling Lambs another monthly fixture celebrating interesting and unknown board games.

He shared with us his love of indie games like the frustratingly addictive cult-classic QWOP a game about running forwards which as the maker explains escews that ‘fantasies of control’ that form the backbone of most beat-em ups, 1st person shooters and other button bashers for ‘fantasies of powelessness’.

More recently David curated and ran Bit of Alright down in the big smoke (London Town), an event about game design. Lovingly made, the event was a huge success and had audiences and games designers finding new ways to make play together; from playing Ordungswissenschaft a game about bureauocracy and following orders, to Jousting with lemons or designing games with pebbles and strips of paper.

David is also one of the co-founders of Nottinghack a 2000 sq. ft open workshop and co-working space in Sneinton and a Show & Tell favourite who chatted to us at Show & Tell Vol. 1

Wendy Honeyman-Smith one of the directors behind Sneinton Market came to share with us some of the produce you might find on a Saturday at Nottingham City’s newest market place. Sneinton Market has occupied a place at the heart of Nottingham’s community for over 150 years, originally a bustling wholesale veg market in recent years it fell into disuse.

For the past few years the market has been in the hands on a community traders association, run by a small team of volunteers. Putting on crafts markets with traders like Curiosity Haus to local food initiatives such as the Transition Market. Last year Sneinton Market underwent a huge regeneration scheme, that featured a public art project by award-winning artist Neville Gabie (artist-in-residence at the Olympic Park) called Orchard.

The marketplace now has 8 apple trees planted in the square and over 109 varieties that have been adopted by residents in Sneinton and St Anns as part of Gabie’s Apple Tree Adoption Network which has now become an urban Orchard. The market sits alongside the newly renovated Victoria Leisure Centre too five minutes walk from the Hockley area of Nottingham.

Wendy explained that “the regeneration of the market is more than just restoring the architectural space of a local market, it is about restoring local food chains and the social heart of a community.”

Jamie Rhodes, part of the filmmaking collective Donkey Stone Films told us about their forthcoming film festival project theHomeless Film Festival and how they want to use the growing industry of film to tackle the ever-growing issue of homelessness.

The Homeless Film Festival will tour 10 independent cinemas across the UK from April 2012; featuring the best films related to homelessness, bring together homeless communities, filmmakers and support organisations to celebrate the great work that is being done and create a space to share ideas about future challenges.

This festival is close to Donkey Stone Films’ heart, they regularly work with people experiencing homelessness to make beautiful film projects, like this one below. A short documentary about the Homeless World Cup.

Continuing with a bit of filmmaker spotlight, we caught up with Ben Wigley director of production company Artdocs and maker of award-winning documentary PS Your Mystery Sender at the beginning of his journey through making his first feature-length documentary.

Ben and producer Anna Griffin have been selected for the prestigious Documentary Campus Masterschool a European development programme to develop Paa Joe: Dead not Buried a documentary that follows Paa Joe, a Ghananian fantasy coffin maker as he trys to save his business through seeking success in the contemporary art world.

Ben and Anna will be offering insight into the process of getting the film made and will be blogging here and you can also find it on Directors Notes and Shooting People.

Wellington Films stopped by to tell us about their latest feature documentary A Man’s Story a film 12 years in the making about the pioneering Saville Row tailor and ‘The Coolest Man on Earth’ Ozwald Boateng. There is going to be a special one-night only screening of the film at Broadway Cinema with a Q & A with the Director and the producers from Wellington Films.

After all that and a quick beer break, David Hayward showed us his favourite graphicless physical video gameJohann Sebastian Joust. The aim of the game is to jostle your opponents’ controller whilst protecting your own all set the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

As the music gets faster your controller becomes less sensitive and as it gets slower it becomes more sensitive, resulting in some pretty serious Resevoir Dogs style standoffs and improvised choreography. Some video to follow!

So that was a bit of a taster of Show & Tell. It happens the first Thursday of every month out of Broadway Cinema it is different each time but its all about celebrating the amazing stuff that goes on in the city but is often difficult to find and now you have no excuse!

General Announcements is our new segment, it’s there for folks who maybe don’t want to command a full Show & Tell slot but have something they want people to know about. If you’ve got a flyer that you want to thrust into people’s hands or want to connect with people for a forthcoming project then this section is for you.

Broadway based Ben Wigley, the filmmaker behind the award-winning PS Your Mystery Sender and director of production company Artdocs that creates content for the likes of Tate Channel, National Trust and the BBC will join us to tell us about his latest project.

Ben has been selected for the prestigious Documentary Campus Masterschool 2012 to develop his most recent production; a feature-length documentary in development called: ‘Paa Joe: Dead Not Buried’. This is a story about a pioneer of the Ghanaian fantasy coffin trade, who seeks international success in the contemporary art world in order to save his livelihood as a coffin maker.

We catch up with Ben at this beginning of his journey, he will be talking about the film, showing us an sneak preview trailer and tell you how you can follow his progress and support the film throughout 2012.

David Hayward is big into games; especially the little ones that are playful and made independently. He runs and works on a whole bunch of games events, gatherings and festivals all around the country including @gamecamp, monthly Nottingham event @gamblinglambs and most recently A Bit of Alright in the big smoke.

David will talk about some of his favourite indie games, what is happening in Nottingham in the way of independent games being made on home soil and throughout the night there will be a chance to play this awesome graphicless game Johann Sebastian Joust! by Die Gute Fabrik.

Jamie Rhodes will be talking about Donkey Stone Films’ latest project, The Homeless Film Festival. Homeless people attended filmmaking workshops at Broadway Cinema and created a short film. Their film, along with some of the best films related to homelessness from around the world, will screen at venues nationwide throughout April 2012. Jamie will talk about the work so far, and how you can get involved.

A MAN’S STORY is the fifth feature film from Broadway-based Wellington Films. Their previous work includes the BAFTA-nominated LONDON TO BRIGHTON and Cannes debut BETTER THINGS.

A MAN’S STORY was filmed over 12 years by director Varon Bonicos, unrestrictedly exploring the life and work of British fashion designer and icon Ozwald Boateng - the youngest and first black tailor to open a shop on Savile Row. The film is studded with a whole host of celebrities, with whom Ozwald has worked, including Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Laurence Fishburne, Paul Bettany and Prince Charles. Producer Al Clark will give us a preview of the trailer and tell the story of how to find the story from over 500 hours of footage.

It will be screened at Broadway on Saturday March 24th for one night only with a Q&A with the director and producers.

Many people in Nottingham have strong memories of place associated with Sneinton Market, and it has been a destination ‘down Hockley’ for 160 years. A social company since 2008, the Directors have spent many hours in meetings with consultants and the City Council to design its future.

Running an outdoor market has been a steep learning curve, and early Saturday starts have put off many aspiring volunteers! But Sneinton Market belongs to several different communities. At ‘Show and Tell’, Wendy Honeyman-Smith, one of the community of directors will talk about a few wares that tell the story of Sneinton Market’s future, and open up a space for others to get involved in supporting the future of the market.

SMALL SCREENS
MARTYN WEST - A WALK THROUGH TIME
Shot on mobile phone this film captures a year in the walking life of sonic artist Martyn West. The film looks to the ground and Martynt’s feet turning the earth through changing textures, terrains and seasons. West’s composed soundtrack of sythesisers and old tape echo machines attempts to capture the changing landscapes, pace and tempo of regular walking.

Soon after starting work on this project Martyn was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and underwent surgery three times during the year. The film has become a video/musical diary of his emotional journey and recovery; it also proved to be an invaluable preoccupation that helped get him through a difficult year.

Michelle Bowen from Primary, Nottingham’s newest and most permanent artist studio complex, will talk about the future plans for the building as the first round of studio residents settle in and they open applications for the second round.

Nottingham Lindyhop will be cutting up all the rugs around Broadway showing off their moves with an impromptu lindyhop circle jam and Lisa will tell us a little about the history of lindyhop and swing dance.

Musician / Producer / Software-abuser Exile (formerly MIDSR) will be showing and playing a micro-set with the electronic instrument (and light show) Tenori-on and passing it round for you to have a play too.

Iain Botteril will be giving it a bit of Show & Tell about TEDx Nottingham they, like us, think there are some ‘Hidden Heroes’ in and around Nottingham doing inspiring things. As such they are organising a unique conference to celebrate and share great ideas. Iain will talk about the history of TED, why now is the time for Nottingham to join the TED community and how to apply as a speaker.

Artist and photographer Trish Evans will be coming to talk about Trace, an international project that fuses photography with parkour to create beautiful images of the traceurs that find playful ways of exploring and navigating urban spaces.

This month, Broadway’s bar staff will be serving up mugs of **Hot Spiced Cider** to warm your cockles.

Silke Pillinger director of the World Event Young Artists, will be showing some images from a recent event in Thessaloniki (Greece) in which 13 UK artists participated and talking about opportunities to collaborate and engage with this exciting and ambitious event that brings together 1000 young artists from across the globe to Nottingham in September 2012. WEYA is about creating opportunities. Opportunities for artists, audiences, venues and partners to engage in exciting intercultural dialogue on a global scale and across political borders.

Jon Burgerman artist, professional doodler and salad enthusiast will be giving us a ‘Cribs’ style tour of his studio all the way from New York. Showing us “Where the magic happens?”, what is in his fridge and some of the things that inspire him.

International Wrong Pong Association Wrong pong is the illegitimate love child of crazy golf and table tennis. Created by Joseph Kelly, Nick Wright and James Michie, members of Nottingham City Artists. The tables are designed to be playable but still fiendishly difficult to master. The rules are flexible and change randomly as the games progress. At the end of the tournament, a new champion will be crowned and awarded the I.W.P.A. trophy. Broadway is our fourth stop on a world-wide tour in the lead up to London 2012 where we hope to have selected our squad to face teams from other pong playing nations.

Keith Cosgrove, Head Beekeeper at Stonebridge City Farm will be talking about our amazing furry flying friend, the bee. For the Apiphobics do not fear there will be no bees present, its too cold and they will be having their tea anyway. Keith will be showing some of the equipment involved in caring for bees, telling us about his experiences, answering questions and there may be a sweet treat also.

If you’ve never been to Stonebridge City Farm before, they are going to be hosting a feast Sunday 11 December as part of Orchard Sneinton, a public art programme around the redevelopment of Sneinton Market. The feast is open to all so you should definately come.

The Music Exchange is a not-for-profit record shop run by homelessness charity Framework. From humble beginnings in July 2009, the shop has evolved to be a staple of Nottingham’s music scene, collaborating with promoters and labels. Crucially The Music Exchange social enterprise that exists as a platform for supporting for vulnerable individuals that require the help of Framework to gain confidence and independence by volunteering in the shop. Joey one of the shop’s staff will tell the story of how The Music Exchange began and talk about what they do. Why not go pick up some delicious vinyl? Here is a map of how to get to the shop in West End Arcade, Nottingham just opposite the Central Library.

Nottingham’s purveyors of psych-tronica-folk-metal-hop-pop when not making music are sparking up collaborations all over the city and beyond. Most recently working with sonic artist Dallas Simpson to make a series of experiments with binaural sound and video. For Show & Tell they are going to be showing some of these video experiments in advance of a live and exclusive headphone gig with Dallas Simpson at Broadway Friday 2 December from 8PM. Jennie Syson editor of Nottingham Visual Arts will be telling the story behind Nottingham’s very own Visual Arts magazine, launching Edition No.5 THE CRAFT ISSUE, giving away back issues and free posters and telling you how to contribute or support the magazine as it goes into its 3rd year.

HSNOTTS (Hackerspace Notts) is an awesome new space in Nottingham, cooked up by a whole bunch of makers, tinkers and artists. Hackerspaces are a growing international network of not-for-profit community owned workshops and co-working spaces to make or do almost anything. Nottingham officially boasts the largest hackerspace in the UK. Founding members will be talking about how it got started, how to become a member and showing off some of the great projects currently being made there.

Dealmaker, one of Nottingham’s freshest independent record labels in collaboration with Soul Prolapse will be showing snippets of their latest project. The Order To Come - A film by Johnny Crump & Shaun Pubis Trailer dedicated to showing how the art of cut ’ n ’ paste and remediation is the order of things to come. Dealmaker will be showing a sneak peaks from this blast of samples, sound and video and talking about how the project started. Johnny Crump will be performing The Order To Come in real time on November 3rd at Nottingham Contemporary.

Cold Warrior is the latest short film from award-winning writer/director, Emily Greenwood, and is being produced by Wellington Films (producers of the BAFTA-nominated LONDON TO BRIGHTON). They are going to launching their crowd-funding campaign to complete the final stages of production. Support them by visiting their campaign page check out the trailer, and bag yourself some perks in the process.

This film is inspired by allegations that came to light from a former President of the Olympic Committee, stating that, in the 1970s and ’80s, some gymnasts were being put through a traumatic “abortion doping” procedure which would result in an undetected boost of strength.

Cold Warrior tells the fictional story of Ana, who finds herself in the middle of such a plot.
